Our Story: Busoga has always had the soil. Now it has the estate.
Before it was sugarcane country, it was coffee country. Robusta coffee is indigenous to the forests of the Lake Victoria basin. Wild Coffea canephora still grows in Uganda's forests today, and it grew in Busoga long before any plantation, any cane field, and any commercial crop took over the land. Then came the cane, for generations, Busoga has grown sugarcane. The land suits it and the income is familiar.
In 2024, Thena Estates broke ground on converted sugarcane land in Mayuge District, just off the Jinja-Iganga highway. Thena Estates is more than a coffee farm; it is a bold vision for what agriculture in Busoga can become. We are building a commercially strong enterprise rooted in the land and powered by a local ecosystem committed to shaping a new future for coffee in the region.
Busoga has the natural gifts to thrive as a Robusta coffee region: fertile soils, a favourable climate, and communities with deep agricultural experience. For too long, much of this potential has remained untapped, with farming shaped largely by subsistence production and commercial sugarcane.
We believe Thena Estates can open a new chapter for Busoga by proving that commercial-scale coffee farming can succeed here. Through meaningful local employment, dependable agricultural and processing supply chains, and professional coffee processing for neighbouring smallholder farmers, we aim to create opportunity that grows far beyond our own estate.
In time, we see Busoga standing proudly as a recognised coffee origin in international markets. This is the heart of Caffe Busoga. A Busoga coffee origin that the international specialty market knows by name, the way it knows Bugisu Arabica. The way it will one day say: the world's best Robusta was always growing here. We just had to prove it.
The origin was always here.
